While there's no official word as of yet, it seems Moffats run of Doctor Who is coming to its end. It's unlikely that we'll suddenly have a unprepared writer take reigns for series 8, so late into series 7. Instead, we can put our bets on that Series 8 will be Moffats last, writing for just as many as his predecessor Russel T. Davies has. Why you ask? Well, that comes from his comments at interviews this past San Diego Comic Con.
" ...there's a plan, and we will end the Eleventh Doctor's run with the answers to some of those questions."
Moffat further went to elaborate that his arc with River Song has met its natural end with the Series 7 finale, The Name of the Doctor. While he was open to reintroducing the character under condition that he thinks of something suiting for her, he was happy with how things ended.
Now that all the story arc's will be wrapped up by Christmas Day, where will that leave us for the upcoming Series 8? Perhaps we can see our first season in a long time, where the Doctor just gets to go on adventures, without the fate of the universe lying upon his shoulders.
With Matt Smith already slated to end his tenure as the Doctor with the upcoming Christmas special (Set to film this September), it seems that we're at the end of our current Era of Doctor Who. Where Doctor Who will go next, and who'll pick up the heavy burden of lead writer, remains to be seen.
